ICAME 39 – First Circular, January 16 2018

Corpus Linguistics and Changing Society

Tampere, Finland, 30 May – 3 June 2018

Dear ICAMErs,

This year’s ICAME, i.e. ICAME 39 in Tampere, is approaching and we are making good progress with the preparations. The decisions have been made, the presenters have been informed of those decisions, and the registration is now open.

Abstract submission and reviewing process

We received a total of 143 abstract submissions. Each abstract was blind-reviewed by two reviewers. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Scientific Committee and ICAME Board members for reviewing the abstracts. In the end, we accepted 96 full papers and work-in-progress reports, 1 software presentation, and 10 posters. There will also be four pre-conference workshops, which had separate reviewing and acceptance procedures by the workshop conveners.

We have opted for an all-inclusive registration fee (excluding accommodation). The registration fee includes all coffee breaks, lunches, the welcoming reception on Wednesday, the City reception on Thursday, the lake cruise on Friday, and the gala dinner on Saturday. Additional optional social programme, which will be available for Friday afternoon, will be charged separately (for details see below and at our website).

The Early Bird Registration fee is 350 EUR and is valid until 31 March. From 1 April, it will be 375 EUR. Please note that it is not possible to opt out of the gala dinner, nor is it possible to book individual days of attendance. However, it is possible to attend the pre-conference workshops only (for 25 EUR).

The conference venue itself, Tampere Hall Congress Centre, is within walking distance of the train station, and the conference hotels. Conference participants are asked to make their own hotel reservations and pay for their accommodation on arrival at the hotel. Pre-reservations have been made in the nearby hotels listed below and on the website. Please note that the number of available rooms is limited, and each hotel has its own booking code and deadline for making a discounted reservation (listed on our website). The room prices only apply to bookings made directly with the hotel by email or by phone. All prices are per room per night, and include breakfast buffet and VAT.

Holiday Inn Tampere – Central Station, Standard single room 108 EUR/Standard double room 123 EUR

Lapland Hotel Tampere, Single room 120 EUR/Double room 135 EUR

Original Sokos Hotel Villa, Standard single room 130 EUR/Standard double room 150 EUR

Solo Sokos Hotel Torni Tampere, Solo single room 140 EUR/Solo double room 160 EUR

More affordable options are listed on the conference website.

Registration procedure and participant numbers

The ICAME constitution stipulates that no more than 200 participants can attend the conference. Due to the popularity of the pre-conference workshops (which do count towards the total number of participants) and a fairly large number of speakers with co-presenters at the main conference, we therefore encourage delegates with papers accepted for the conference or a pre-conference workshop, or who have some other active role at the conference, to register at their earliest convenience. We ask that participants who do not have an active role at the conference wait until the beginning of March before registering for the conference. If you have any questions or have problems registering, please do not hesitate to contact us at icame39@uta.fi. You can access the registration form here (https://www.lyyti.fi/reg/ICAME39), or via the conference website.

After submitting your online registration, you will be able to pay the fee with your credit card or via PayPal. A payment receipt will be sent by e-mail. The accommodation will be paid directly to the hotel.

Travelling to Tampere

Tampere is located in Southern Finland, 175 km north of Helsinki. A great option for some delegates is the Tampere-Pirkkala Airport, which is served by daily connections from/to a number of European cities. If the schedule to Tampere-Pirkkala does not work for you, we recommend flying to Helsinki Airport and continuing to Tampere by rail or bus. We have gathered information on the different travelling options on the conference website.

The Conference Programme

The conference will follow the typical ICAME format starting on Wednesday morning with pre-conference workshops. You are most welcome to attend any of the four workshops. In the late afternoon, the conference will open with the first plenary lecture, which will be followed by a welcoming reception at the University of Tampere Main Building (across the street from the conference venue). All the following days will begin with a plenary lecture or the poster session.

Friday, as usual, is the excursion day – we begin with a selection of optional excursions, many focusing on the working-class history of Tampere. You may take a tour of the city centre, or experience an authentic Finnish sauna, for instance! Later, we embark on a cruise on Lake Pyhäjärvi and enjoy dinner in an island restaurant. The gala dinner will be on Saturday, and the conference presentations continue on Sunday morning. A preliminary programme summary will be made available on the conference website soon.

The following speakers have agreed to give plenaries at the conference:

Marc Alexander: The Hansard Corpus through a telescope

Alexandra D’Arcy: What can the kids tell us about language change?

Martin Hilpert: The great temptation: What diachronic corpora do and do not reveal about social change

Merja Kytö: tba

The Book of Abstracts

We ask all presenters with accepted papers to proofread their abstracts. Please make sure that your abstract includes sufficient information on the data and methods, and presents the (preliminary) results. The length of the abstract should not exceed 500 words (excluding references). For references please use the APA formatting. Revised and proofread abstracts should be sent to the conference email (icame39@uta.fi) in .doc(x) format by Friday, March 2, 2018. Please remember to add your name(s) and affiliation(s) to the abstract.
