FINAL CIRCULAR, May 23, 2018
With only a week to go before ICAME 39, the to-do-list is getting shorter and shorter! The registration period is now over, and we are expecting around 160 delegates to arrive in Tampere. In this final circular, you will find information on the more practical aspects of the conference, e.g. finding your hotel or the conference venue once you arrive!
All presentations will be uploaded via Speaker services. In brief, we ask all presenters (with full papers, work-in-progress reports, or poster presentations) to either
- have their presentation file on a USB flash drive, and upload it to a computer located next to the registration desk, or
- send the file to the conference email (email@example.com) before the presentation.
Files uploaded in the speaker services will be available on the session room computers; we ask you to check that the transfer was successful before your presentation.
If you are arriving directly at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport, you can take a bus to the city centre (bus 1A). A single ticket costs 5€ and can be bought directly from the driver (they only accept cash). The timetable and directions are available through Journey Planner: please give “lentoasema” as the Place of departure, and the address of your destination as the Destination. If you prefer a taxi, this should cost around 35€.
If you arrive at Helsinki Airport, you will need to take a train or a bus to Tampere. Both trains and buses depart directly from the airport; buses from outside Terminal 2 (bays 23 and 24), and trains from the train station which you will find if you turn left after the Customs area and follow the corridor until the station entry is on your right-hand side. Commuter train P runs from the airport (“Lentoaseman asema”) to the Tikkurila station (“Tikkurilan asema”), where you can catch a connecting train to Tampere. You can check the timetables and buy tickets online on the national railway company’s website (from “Helsinki Airport” to “Tampere”). Tickets can also be bought at the ticket machines on the platform at the airport (payment by chip cards). The prices usually vary from 9.90€ to 21€ depending on how much in advance the ticket is bought.
You can check the bus timetables, and buy tickets online, on the Matkahuolto website. Please note that there is a transfer at Keimola stop – the bus driver will make sure you are transferred to the correct bus! At Tampere, the bus will arrive at the bus station which is conveniently within walking distance from the hotels and the conference venue – please consult our map (also available on the conference website)!
Once in Tampere, most of the conference hotels and Tampere Hall are located on the backside of the train station; there are two separate tunnels leading from the platforms (you will have to descend a flight of stairs) to the main hall of the station and, in the other direction, towards the hotels and Tampere Hall. If you find yourself in the main hall, please turn around! Our map will help you find the conference venue, and the hotels.
Weather in Finland? Who knows! The sun may shine, the rain (or snow) may fall, so please monitor the weather forecast! The past week has been warmer than usual (up to +26°Celsius), and the forecast looks promising, so far!
The registration desk will be located in the main lobby of Tampere Hall (1st floor, through the main doors, past the Tampere Hall info desk). The registration desk will open on Wednesday at 8.30, and will remain manned throughout the conference.
Tampere Hall provides wireless Internet access throughout the premises.
Evening programme on Wednesday and Thursday
On Wednesday, after the pre-conference workshops and the first plenary, the Welcome Reception will be held in the Main building of the University of Tampere, just across the street from Tampere Hall. After the reception, you are welcome to join us for a panoramic view of the city from the top of the Torni hotel! Or, bring your swimsuit and experience the authentic Finnish sauna at Tullin Sauna (we’ll be happy to tell you more about this option, just drop us a line)!
On Thursday, the City of Tampere will host a reception at the City Hall (address: Keskustori 10). A guided walk to the City Hall will leave from Tampere Hall at 17.30.
Excursions and boat trip on Friday
Friday is the excursion day: we will first embark on a selection of optional excursions, and then complete the day with the traditional boat trip, and a buffet dinner on Viikinsaari island. Please consult the conference website for information on the individual excursions!
The boat, called “Silver Sky”, leaves from Laukontori (see the map) at 17.00, and all participants are requested to be there by 16.45, at the very latest. The meeting point is under the clock in the middle of the square. The Silver Sky will take us on a 45-minute round trip on lake Pyhäjärvi, before taking us to Viikinsaari for dinner. After dinner, you can take a stroll around the island, or try some Finnish summer games! You may return to Laukontori on the regular boat service, departing half past every hour (please note that the last boat departs at 22.30!).
Conference dinner on Saturday
The conference dinner will be held at Restaurant von Nottbeck, which is located in the beautiful neo-baroque palace Näsilinna. The dinner starts at 19.30, and a guided walk to the restaurant leaves from Tampere Hall at 18.45. The venue is also accessible via public transportation. While ICAME has always thrived on the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for newcomers and regulars alike, the day of the conference dinner happens to be the graduation day for many high school students in Finland. You may thus expect to see many young ladies and gentlemen dressed up in their best in the city centre, but also at Tampere Hall, where some of the graduation festivities take place. We encourage you to embrace the celebration and dress accordingly for the conference dinner!
