Travelling to Tampere
Tampere is located in Southern Finland, 175 km north of Helsinki.
Helsinki Airport is served by excellent flight connections from all parts of the world. We recommend flying to Helsinki Airport and continuing to Tampere by rail or bus.
Tampere-Pirkkala Airport, located 17 km south-west of Tampere city-centre, is served by daily connections from/to Helsinki and Stockholm. In the summer time, Ryanair operates from the airport to Bremen, Budapest and Riga, and vice versa. These (connecting) flights are a great option should the schedules work for you.
From/to the airports
The fastest way to reach Tampere from Helsinki Airport is by train. Commuter train P runs from the airport (“Lentoaseman asema”) to the Tikkurila station (“Tikkurilan asema”), where you can catch a connecting train to Tampere. You can check the timetables and buy tickets online on the national railway company’s website (from “Helsinki Airport” to “Tampere”). Tickets can also be bought at the ticket machines on the platform at the airport (payment by chip cards only). If you don’t have a chip card, train tickets can also be bought at R-Kioski which is located in Terminal 2 (open 24/7). The prices of tickets vary from 9.90 e to 21 e depending on how much in advance the ticket is bought. Please note that although the ticket you’ve bough at the airport might be allocated to a specific commuter train, you can hop on any of the commuter trains up to 80 minutes before your connecting train to Tampere leaves from Tikkurila.
Regular bus connections operate between Helsinki Airport and Tampere bus station approximately once an hour. All buses leave from bay 23-24 in front of Terminal 2, while some also call at Terminal 1, bay 13. You can check the timetables and buy tickets online on the Matkahuolto website (from “Helsinki-Vantaa Airport” to “Tampere”). Tickets can also be bought from the driver. The price for a one-way ticket is 27 e. For selected connections, discounted tickets are sold online in advance.
Those travelling on a low budget might want to check the OnniBus website for cheaper bus tickets from Keimola, Vantaa to either Tampere bus station or Kaleva (2 km from the city centre). To reach the Keimola bus stop, take commuter train I from the airport to Kivistö (“Kivistön asema”). The OnniBus buses leave from in front of the gas station.
Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is connected to the city centre by a local bus (bus 1A). A single ticket costs 5 e and can be bought directly from the driver. The drivers only accept cash. Please reserve coins or small bills (5 or 10 e) to pay for your ticket. The timetables are available here (Lentoasema = airport, Rautatieasema = railway station).
